Big Bluestem is warm season perennial grass that will tolerant a wide range of soil and moisture conditions. A bunch grass that grows from 5’-7’ tall likes full sun, it has a high drought tolerance and blooms from August to October. May be mixed with other native prairie grasses or wildflowers. Big Bluestem is used for erosion control and birds will consume the seeds and use it for nesting whereas white-tailed deer graze the vegetative parts. Should be mowed in the fall, as it has little ability to stand over the winter in many areas. Emergence will occur in 3 to 4 weeks after seeding with adequate moisture and soil temperatures. First-season growth is often slow.
